THIRST CURFEW’s long out-of-print summertime classic, now reissued on MAGNET ISLAND. Recorded in Iowa City, summer 2016.

As with any improvised session, the particular quality of these recordings is inseparable from the methods used to create them. In this case, no amplifier was available, so the pair was required to run all of their instruments through a boombox. Most CURFEW sessions involve guitar in some form which only emerges here on one track. Another key feature of Side A is its atonality; one of the keyboards being played was tuned completely out of key, creating dissonant melodies that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. In the second half of Side B, new textures emerge in the form of acoustic noodling, dizzying keyboards (in tune this time), and sound effects of birds.

The result is one of THIRST CURFEW’s most unique recordings, featuring heavy use of phasers, drum machines and distortion to generate an aquatic theme. After the master tapes were destroyed in a flood, the only track to see the light of day for two years was JAPAN, BRAZIL, CHINA, USA (USSR), a satirical take on the fears of globalism.

Now, after being painstakingly restored by an international team of anthropologists and historians, MAGNET ISLAND is proud to present CAFE FRANCOIS in its original format, ripped straight from the water-damaged master tapes at lossless audio quality.
